I’ve thought about what to write in my review for Nancy Thayer’s Family Reunion, but every time I started, it didn’t do the book justice.This is my first Nancy Thayer book, and from some of the other reviews I read, I should expect to enjoy others even more.It seems hardly any readers likes Alicia, and I’m no different, but maybe that’s intentional. Her obvious and outspoken greed sort of turned my stomach. Even after I read and understood some of the reasons she was the way she was. But, you know what? It’s OK to have that one fingernail-on-the-chalkboard character.I adored Eleanor, and it was nice to read the POV of an elder. Her vulnerability and her tenacity play well together. I admire her for speaking out and keeping quiet when she thinks it is necessary.Ari could’ve been a tad bit more mature, but she was head over heels more grown-up than her own mother.To me, this book had three main characters: Eleanor, Ari and the oceanfront cliff house. Why do we hold on to things the way we do?There were times as I was reading that I thought ‘this is ridiculous, nobody would...’ then I’d come up with at least one or two instances where I’ve been in of known people in the same situation.I’d recommend this book. I’ve never been to Nantucket (probably a little too blue blood for me), but I do live in a resort town and deal with summer people. I know what it’s like to be (married into) a multi-generational family who has been here for seven generations, and love where we live, and never look forward to ‘family pieces’ get broken up.
