There are some spoilers ahead, you have been warned. This graphic novel is just a pleasure to read! I have Aspergers or HFA, and it's almost like the protagonist--Marguerite--is the French version of myself... just more successful. The book starts off introducing her, her home and her place of work. The books discusses how Marguerite's coworkers and boss are extremely intolerant of her. One example of this is a dialogue between herself and two other coworkers (p. 20-21). It ends with the coworkers scoffing at Marguerite's difficulty of engaging in small talk. Another example is a dialogue between the protagonist and her boss (p. 26-27). The discussion was just her boss getting frustrated at her for not spending her lunch time mingling with other coworkers. The story also contrasts the Marguerite when she feels comfortable and when she is developing anxiety or panic attacks. Pg. 35 shows her getting comfortable with house pets in her "cocoon" and pg. 14-17 and 49-51 shows her getting "stressed out" after sensitivities of her environment begin to increase. The protagonist would soon discover, after a casual internet search, that her sensitivities and other peculiar behavioural phenotypes stem from Aspergers syndrome.Marguerite then had to radically adjust her life, cutting off relationships where the other person(s) were unable to understand her and then make new friends consisting of other neurodivergent people. She would eventually start an internet blog, attends graduate school (with appropriate accommodations of course) to get a doctorate in psychology and spend her spare time fighting for social justice causes while enjoying her slice of life. This was a really great autobiography, in my assessment at least. I have a hard time reading novels and traditional biographies, so the graphical novel format is refreshing (I presume the author thought about people with autism who struggle to process words). Sadly, American society is just as bad as French society when it comes to neudo-atypical people. In my experience with elementary school and junior high, I dealt with teachers and schoolchildren who had no concept of boundaries. I dealt with a schoolteacher who had to rank students based on performance and put those ranking on a "data wall," thought that it was appropriate to show up to students home unannounced (though in rare circumstances) and other inappropriate things. The administration of the junior high school that I attended had its principal and assistant principals walk into our classroom and start yelling over, quite frankly, petty things like low marks and whatnot (heck, I even got to experience the school principal's yelling along with other "failing" students in an auditorium).Even in college and other aspects of adult life, it seems that normal people are trying to nudge me to "get out more," and go to college in person for the "college experience," when I would rather stay home and do an online college programme. Honestly it's sad that the individuals who previously surrounded Marguerite---who I am convinced is the author's alter-ego---dish out this rubbish.I also like the art style that the book presents. It uses an interesting colour scheme to match the feelings of Marguerite. It begins with a greyish colour scheme in the beginning, then changes as Marguerite's feelings evolve throughout the book. What's interesting is that for most of the book, Marguerite's shoes are red. The art style is Art Deco if I'm not mistaken (though I'm not an artist, so take that with a grain of salt). There are some minor problems with the book. For example, in the end, the author quotes William Hazlitt presumably to agree with him. Personally, I feel that it's better to quote authorities to disagree with them. Also, there's a "facts section" that briefly discusses statistics, though I felt that the treatment was a bit light (it would be nice if the author added an appendix elaborating on the methods used to estimate the base rates and whatnot). On the flip side, the author used France as an "anti-role model," which is good; it's better to know what not to do than to mimic someone who is good.Overall it's a great book. Everyone should read it :D
